FLIPBOOKS

The Flipbook projects consist of images taken from moving vehicles over long journeys. There are three separate journeys represented in this series: Trans Siberian (2006), Mexico (2008), and Uganda (2009).

The images seek to convey the sense that the viewer is standing in a single spot, observing rather than being on a moving vehicle. However, occasional glimpses of a reflection or blurred images remind the viewer that the scenes are in fact viewed from a moving position.

Thus, the series exists both as a whole, an entire journey, and as individual parts, in that every single image creates a unique observation point over a changing landscape.

The reader has the freedom of viewing the journey page by page, one image at a time, or of flipping through to view the entire journey from beginning to end. The books are set up back to front, so that the beginning of the journey is at the back of the book. This is in fitting with the flipbook convention that allows for a faster transition between the pages.

The flipbook format allows the viewer to observe the journey at his/her own pace and even to stop and observe landscapes that had once fleetingly passed by the window during the original journey.

The images in this series exist as part of a book but also individually in their own right.
