NEIGHBORHOODS

Neighborhoods is a series of photographic projects that are each developed around a single neighborhood or part of the city of London. The three individual volumes that make up the series offer different approaches and constructions of the areas they examine. The areas are united by the fact that they are very average residential or commercial areas in the local context and what distinguishes them is the way they are observed.

Neighbohoods Vol. 1: Urban Orientation (2003), explores two neighborhoods in South London. It consists of photographs of a prominent structure in each neighborhood from numerous vantage points. Maps accompanying the images indicate the spot the photograph was taken in relation to the prominent structure.

In Neighborhoods Vol.2, Traveling a Line (2004), a neighborhood in South London is explored. The book is divided into two parts. The first part consists of sequential photographs taken of a seemingly arbitrary route across the neighborhood beginning on one side of the tracks and ending on the other. The second part displays photographs in the form of postcards showing details or "sights" along the walk that were taken over a longer period of time.

In Neighborhoods Vol.3: Walthamstow Diptychs (2005), a neighborhood in East London is explored. The book is divided into three parts. The first part consists of a walk through the local market, once during a weekday when it is operational and once on a Sunday when it is not. The second part consists of views through windows, one from bus windows, the other through building windows seen from the bus. The third and final part consists of views from walks through the nearby reservoirs.
